about

Sea glass, sea shells and driftwood. The Silver Darlings arrive at your door cold, wet and weary. Give them five minutes by your fire and a glass of whiskey and they will soon spill songs from their pockets and stories polished like pebbles and worn like shells, polished by love and loss and left by your doorstep when they’ve gone. Put them to your ear and you can hear the sea.

The Silver Darlings play the songs of Andy Whitehouse and have evolved from previous encounters as The Glorious, and latterly Honey Barbara. 2011 album “Souls” was well received and regarded as “music to make you feel better” by Americana UK. It drew favourable reviews from those in the know such as legendary singer/writer Martin Stephenson (“beautiful”), Dolly Varden’s Steve Dawson (“a unique, engaging voice”) and the whiskey rabbi himself, Geoff Berner (“cliché free songwriting”). Meanwhile respected blogger The Wagonmaster in Nowhere Town urged his readers to ““find a corner of your heart for The Silver Darlings” and Italian taste shaper “Habla Con Gian” voted it one of the albums of the year.

Often a shifting collection of musicians and fellow travellers, 2016 sees a more settled line up signed up by Sheffield label Anklebreka. The first release from this partnership is Waternark. A true story with a happy ending.

Andy Whitehouse – vocals and guitar
Lindsay Callaway – vocal and bass
Harry Corps – keyboards
Richard Master – lead guitar
Simon Joy – violin
James Howe – drums and percussion

lyrics

She had a smile like yours, always half amused
So is it any wonder, when I get confused
And from time to time I have to double take and sigh
When I realise my mistake

I hold this paper up to the light to see the water mark
In between the sheets, she is the water mark

She had eyes like yours, soft and sad
Focused middle distance on the bad luck she'd had
And from time to time I blink and you're gone
And it's your face that I focus on.

I hold this paper up the light to see the water mark
In between the sheets, she is the water mark.

She had a heart like yours, black as night
When all the stars are shining bright
She blazed down on me like the sun
The shadow lingers long after she's gone

I hold this paper up to the light to see the water mark
In between the sheets, she is the water mark.
